Shop Small Saturday

I’ve written other posts about Small Business Saturday and other special November Promo Days, and I don’t want to re-tread the same ideas. If you missed them, I have listed them below, but keep reading because there are some other things you need to think through.

Add a Cause

Think through your customers’ experience and iron out these important items.

You want to make sure to greet every customer. It’s best to have someone near the front to do the initial formal greeting. Are they saying welcome, listing the key promotions or sales, talking about a cause you’re promoting? Make sure whoever is posted at the front is well-versed on whatever it is you want customers to know and it’s not too much information.

Make them as simple as possible, and probably focus on one main tactic for the day. If it’s too complicated, you’ll lose your customers.

Easy promotions:

  1. Sign-up for our email and receive this SWAG item.
  2. Spend $100 or more and get a $10 off coupon for next time (not today).
  3. Here’s a frequent buyer punch card. Get one punch for every $100 you spend—it starts today. Get all 10 punches and receive a $50 gift card.

Difficult promotions involve any number of these attributes:

  1. Requiring a customer to download an app, then register, commit, etc.in order to checkout while a line forms behind them.
  2. Follow, like, share, tag a friend, and leave a comment.
  3. Minimum spend limits are too high to qualify. This would be relative to your product or service. If you sell $5 earrings, then needing to spend $1000 to get your special offer is way too much. How many people buy 200 pairs of earrings? Simplify to ten visits or spend 10X as much as your average purchase amount.
  4. Too many variables or restrictions, as in, “Buy one holiday ornament, and a pair of matching socks to receive 10% off vintage cocktail napkins, and if you spend $100, you will be entered into a drawing to win a free set of matching hot pads. Limited supply, must be a resident of Long Beach, and at least 21 years of age. Must be present at the drawing. Follow us on Instagram when we announce the date of the drawing.” Yikes! It’s exhausting to hear or read and then you have to remember to watch for the date.

Suggesting complimentary items needs to be automatic. Look at what you think will be your top-sellers. Is that one item enough to qualify for your minimum promotion? If not, have your eye on a few things you can offer that will get them to or over your minimum purchase for that SWAG item.

Simple and it doesn’t cost you anything.
